One of the many sheepdog cartoons at the age of 17. I still love drawing dogs!
Brett (Cardy) grew up on a farm near Whittlesea in Victoria. From an early age he was inspired by comics like Footrot Flats, Mad Magazines and watching Tv shows like Mr Squiggle, the Bugs Bunny Show and Wacky races. He's cheeky sense of humour gravitated to anything to do with cartoons and not a day went by where he didn't pick up a pencil to draw.
He illustrated his first book during high school and became a regular cartoonist for Hoofs and Horns magazine. In the early 90's he worked for the Seymour Telegraph and spent a few years painting caricatures and advertising on shop windows.
In 1994 he began travelling to outback communities, churches and schools, telling cartoon stories on a white board. This opened up opportunities to travel overseas and use cartooning to communicate. He realised the power of visual stories using pictures to tell a thousand words - in any language! Cardy continues his visual communication and animation in many different venues, kids camps and concerts.
He has worked for more than 30 years in free-lance cartooning, art, graphics and animation across Australia for companies such as the NAB, VACC, Coles and illustrations for the International Cricket Council (ICC). Since 2010 Cardy has set his focus on delivering fun art incursions and workshops to students of all ages.

I remember being in a room full of adults at Swinburn University in 1986. I was 15 and my Mum had enrolled me into a weekend workshop with 'Weg' the famous Melbourne Cartoonist. I sat up the front, pencil ready, soaking it all in, amazed as I watched Weg whip out a sketch in seconds. Looking back now I'm really grateful for that experience. I owe a lot to my Mum who is an awesome realist artist. And I also thank God for some amazing teachers throughout my school years - who encouraged and inspired me to do my creative best and gave me opportunity (I probably took too much - drawing in class instead of class work :) And so here I am, years later, inspiring creativity in others and sharing the joy of cartooning, watching students get excited when they give it a go, realise their potential and have a laugh too.
I've also worked as a chaplain in schools and in the art therapy / well-being space - using cartooning to get a message across. So if you have a theme for the class or want to highlight school values - we can work together tailoring a workshop to suit and fit it in with your class curriculum. Feel free to reach out and have a chat. If you are from another State other than Victoria I do offer Zoom sessions as well :)
